"Off-peak" hot water runs on a controlled load — a separately measured supply the network can switch on during cheaper periods, traditionally through its own dedicated meter. Modern smart meters measure controlled load inside one unit, which is why so many Sydney meter boxes still carry old off-peak meters that are now redundant. Sydney Power Group handles the wiring, metering and removal works around controlled load as an accredited Level 2 ASP.
Controlled Load 1 vs Controlled Load 2
Controlled Load 1 typically energises for a limited overnight window — the cheapest rate, suited to storage hot water systems that only need one heating cycle. Controlled Load 2 energises for longer periods across the day at a slightly higher rate, suiting larger tanks, heat pumps and pool heating. Which one you're on (and whether it still suits your usage) is a retailer tariff setting, but the wiring that separates the load is physical — and that's the part we do.

Converting to a Smart Meter
When a smart meter replaces an old accumulation meter, the controlled load circuit must be correctly re-terminated so the new meter measures it on its own register — done wrong, hot water lands on the general tariff and your bills jump. We prepare the meter panel, sort the circuit separation and coordinate the retailer's installer so the conversion happens in one visit. Costs are covered in our meter upgrade cost guide.

Removing Redundant Off-Peak Meters
Switched to gas, a heat-pump on a timer, or already on a smart meter? The old off-peak meter may be doing nothing but cluttering the panel — and on older boards it can block a switchboard upgrade or solar installation. We arrange abolition of the redundant register with the retailer and physically remove the meter and wiring. Removing several across a building? See meter consolidation.

Is Controlled Load Still Worth It?
For electric storage hot water, usually yes — it remains one of the cheapest rates available. But if you're adding solar, heating water in the middle of the day from your own panels can beat any off-peak rate, which changes the wiring answer too. We'll give you the straight recommendation for your setup, then do the metering work it needs. Call 0466 125 125 or ask via the contact page.
