A metering pillar — also known as a pillar box or pit-and-pipe meter enclosure — is a freestanding or boundary-mounted structure that houses the electricity meters, isolation switches, and consumer mains connections for properties with underground supply. They are standard on duplexes, townhouses, villa complexes, and multi-unit residential developments where each dwelling requires its own separately metered underground supply. Installation and replacement of metering pillars is Level 2 ASP work. New Duplex and Townhouse Metering

When a dual occupancy, duplex, or townhouse development requires separate electricity supply for each dwelling, a metering pillar is typically the required infrastructure. Rather than running individual overhead connections to each dwelling, a single underground supply from the network is brought to the pillar, with individual metering and consumer mains then distributed to each lot from a common enclosure. We design and install metering pillars for duplex and townhouse developments to Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy standards, coordinate the NMI assignments for each lot, and manage retailer registration on completion.

Metering Pillar Replacement

Existing metering pillars deteriorate over time — enclosures corrode, cable entries fail, meter bases become non-compliant with current network standards, and defect notices are issued. Where a metering pillar has reached the end of its serviceable life or has received a defect notice from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, full replacement is typically more cost-effective than component-level rectification. We carry out complete metering pillar replacements, preserving existing NMIs and supply arrangements where possible or coordinating new NMI assignments where required.

Pit and Pipe Installation

Metering pillar installation involves underground conduit work from the network's supply pit to the pillar location, which must be coordinated with the network distributor and installed to their specific civil standards. We carry out the full scope — network pit connection, conduit installation, pillar base and foundation, enclosure installation, metering equipment, and consumer mains connections — with all civil and electrical work completed under our Level 2 ASP authorisation.

Development Application and Network Coordination

New metering pillar installations for multi-dwelling developments typically require a new connection application with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy. We prepare and lodge the connection application, liaise with the network distributor throughout the design and approval process, and coordinate the energisation once installation is complete. For developments requiring DA conditions to be satisfied — including individual lot metering requirements — we provide the compliance documentation your certifier needs to close out the condition.
