Mistake 1: Doing Licensed Work Yourself

What you *can* legally do yourself in NSW is a short list: change light bulbs, plug appliances in, reset a tripped safety switch, press the test button. Nearly everything else — switches, power points, light fittings, repairs to fixed wiring — legally requires a licensed electrician, no matter how simple it looks on a video.

The reasons go beyond the fine. If unlicensed work contributes to a fire, insurers may investigate and — depending on the policy — dispute or reduce a claim; there's no compliance certificate to protect you when you sell; and the person who pays for a mistake in fixed wiring is usually whoever touches the circuit next — often a family member. Mistake 2: 'Fixing' a Fuse With Whatever Wire Is Handy

Old rewireable fuses invite the worst DIY fix in the book: re-wiring a blown fuse with heavier wire — or fencing wire, or a nail — so it stops blowing. It stops blowing because it can no longer do its job. The next overload doesn't melt the fuse wire; it heats the cable inside your walls instead.

A fuse that keeps blowing is a symptom, not an inconvenience. Mistake 3: Powerboards and Extension Leads as Permanent Wiring

Daisy-chained powerboards, extension leads run under rugs or through ceilings, double adaptors stacked into a single outlet — these are all ways of asking one circuit to do a job the house wasn't wired for. Heat builds where you can't see it, and leads under rugs and through roof spaces are a well-documented fire pattern.

If a room never has enough outlets, that's not a powerboard problem — it's a wiring problem with a proper fix: more circuits and outlets, installed and certified by a licensed electrician. Homes old enough to be short on power points are often old enough to have ageing wiring worth checking at the same time.

Mistake 4: Ignoring the Warning Signs

Flickering lights, warm switch plates, a fishy or burning smell near the board, buzzing from an outlet, safety switches that trip repeatedly — each of these is the installation telling you something is wrong. The mistake isn't causing the fault; it's normalising it — a fault that's 'done that for years' hasn't proven itself safe, it's just been given years to get worse.
