Know Your Safety Switch
A safety switch (RCD) cuts power in a fraction of a second if it detects electricity leaking to earth — the kind of fault that causes electric shock. Every Sydney home should have one protecting its circuits, and it's the single most important safety device in the house.
Test yours every few months by pressing the 'T' or 'Test' button on the switchboard; power should cut immediately. If it doesn't trip, or if you don't have one at all, that needs addressing promptly. Adding RCDs is often part of a switchboard upgrade.
Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore
Watch for powerpoints or switches that feel warm, buzzing or crackling sounds from outlets, a persistent burning smell, scorch marks around sockets, and breakers that trip repeatedly. Any of these means something is wrong and should be checked by a licensed electrician.
Flickering lights across the whole house — rather than one fitting — can point to a problem at the switchboard or even the supply side. If the issue traces back to your service line or metering, it moves into Level 2 ASP territory.
Where Safe DIY Ends
You can safely replace a lightbulb, reset a tripped breaker, and use plug-in devices sensibly. Everything beyond that — replacing switches, adding circuits, touching the switchboard internals — is licensed electrical work in NSW and illegal to DIY.
Anything on the network side of your meter (overhead or underground mains, the point of attachment, metering, or the connection to the grid) can only be done by a Level 2 ASP. This isn't red tape — it's live infrastructure that's genuinely dangerous to handle.
