How to Test a Safety Switch

With the power on, simply press the 'TEST' button on the safety switch. A healthy switch will trip immediately and cut power to its circuits. Then switch it back on to restore power.

It's worth warning the household first, since anything running on that circuit — computers, medical equipment, aquarium pumps — will lose power momentarily. Reset any clocks or devices afterwards.

What If It Fails?

If pressing the test button does nothing, the safety switch has failed and offers no protection — it needs to be replaced without delay. If it trips but won't reset, there may be a genuine fault on the circuit that needs investigating.

Either way, faulty or missing safety switches are a job for a licensed electrician, often as part of a switchboard upgrade that brings older boards up to standard.
