Sparking Switchboard

A sparking switchboard is a genuine fire and electrocution risk and needs immediate attention. Sparking or arcing means electricity is jumping across a gap where it shouldn't — often from loose connections or failing components. Sydney Power Group (SPG) responds 24/7 across Greater Sydney.

If you see flames or smoke, call 000 immediately and get everyone clear. If it is safe to do so, switch off the power at the main switch. Do not touch the switchboard or attempt to investigate it. Then call SPG on 0466 125 125.

What To Do Right Now

If there's fire or smoke, call 000 first. If it's safe, turn off the main switch to remove power from the board. Do not touch the switchboard, poke at it, or try to stop the sparking yourself — arcing can cause serious burns and electric shock.

Keep everyone away from the board and wait for a qualified emergency electrician. Never attempt a DIY repair on a live or sparking switchboard.

How We Fix a Sparking Board

After confirming safe isolation, our electricians locate the source of the arcing — commonly loose terminals, degraded busbars, overloaded circuits, or worn-out breakers. We then carry out a compliant repair or replacement so the board is safe to re-energise.
