The point of attachment is where the overhead service line from the network physically connects to your building. It's a small piece of hardware, but it defines the boundary between the network and your property — and any work on it is squarely on the network side of the meter, which means a Level 2 ASP like Sydney Power Group is legally required.
Where the Network Ends and Your Home Begins
The point of attachment is the fixing on your wall, eave or bracket where the service cable lands before running down to your meter. Everything from the pole to that point is overhead mains; from there the supply becomes your consumer mains feeding the switchboard.
It's a critical junction. If the attachment is loose, corroded, too low, or badly positioned, it affects the safety and reliability of your entire supply.
Height and Clearance Rules
Points of attachment have strict clearance requirements — the service line must sit a minimum height above the ground, driveways and any accessible surfaces so people and vehicles can pass safely underneath. Renovations, new carports, decks or raised driveways can suddenly bring a previously compliant line too close.
If your service line now hangs too low over a driveway or new structure, the point of attachment often needs to be raised or relocated, which is Level 2 ASP work.
When You Might Need Work Done
Common triggers include building extensions, demolishing or rebuilding a wall the attachment is fixed to, a supply upgrade to three phase, or simply a bracket that has rusted or pulled away over the years. Relocating the attachment usually means coordinating a temporary disconnection with your distributor.
Because this is a live network connection, a standard electrician can't touch it. Only an accredited Level 2 ASP can install, replace or relocate a point of attachment.
