What a Temporary Builders Supply Is

A temporary builders supply (sometimes called a builders pole, temp pole or construction supply) is a standalone metered connection installed at a building site to power construction work. It typically consists of a pole or post carrying a compliant switchboard, metering and outlets, connected to the network by a Level 2 ASP.

It exists because you can't run a construction site off an extension lead from next door, and the permanent supply often can't be energised until the build is well advanced. The temporary supply bridges that gap safely and legally.

It's fully metered, so the power used during construction is billed like any other connection, and it must meet the same safety standards as a permanent installation.

When You Need One

You need a temporary builders supply for most new builds, knock-down rebuilds, and larger renovations where the existing supply is disconnected or inadequate for construction loads. Builders and site managers usually arrange it early because tradespeople can't work safely or efficiently without proper power.

It's also needed when demolition requires the existing network connection to be removed and there's a gap before the new permanent supply goes in. In that case the temporary supply keeps the site running in between.

If your site currently has no supply at all — a vacant block being developed — a temporary connection is almost always the first electrical job on the project.

How the Process Works

The ASP assesses the site and the available network connection point, then installs a compliant temporary pole and switchboard with the required safety switches and metering. We then coordinate with Ausgrid, Endeavour Energy or Essential Energy to energise the connection.

The metering side is arranged so the supply is properly billed, and all the compliance documentation is lodged with the network. Once energised, the site has safe, RCD-protected power for the build.

At the end of construction, the temporary supply is disconnected and the permanent connection — overhead or underground — is established and energised. We handle both stages.

Cost Factors

The cost of a temporary builders supply depends on the setup required, the distance to the network connection point, and whether an overhead or underground temporary connection suits the site. A straightforward pole near an existing network point is cheaper than a long or awkward connection.

Ground conditions, access, and whether the distributor needs to attend all affect the price, as does the size of the supply — a large site with heavy construction loads needs a bigger board and heavier cabling than a small renovation.

Timeframes

The physical install of a temporary supply is usually quick — often done in a day once materials are on site. The variable is network coordination: the distributor has to energise the connection, and that runs on their scheduling.

For that reason, arrange your temporary supply well ahead of when you actually need power on site. Leaving it to the last minute risks tradespeople standing around waiting for the network to energise.
