Sometimes power needs to be safely turned off at the source and later turned back on — for a demolition, a major upgrade, a supply relocation or an emergency make-safe. Because these tasks involve physically breaking and remaking the connection to the distribution network, disconnection and reconnection is exclusively the work of a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider (ASP). Doing it any other way isn't just non-compliant — it's genuinely dangerous.

What Disconnection and Reconnection Means

A network disconnection physically isolates your property from the grid at the network side — at the pole, pillar or service fuse — so there is no live supply entering the premises. A reconnection restores that supply once the reason for the disconnection has been dealt with.

This is different from simply switching off your main switch, which leaves the network side live up to your meter. A true disconnection removes the network supply entirely, which is what makes it safe for demolition, major switchboard work or relocating a service. Common Reasons for a Disconnection

Demolition is the most common. Major electrical works are another. Upgrading a switchboard, replacing consumer mains or moving a metering panel often requires the supply to be dead while the work is carried out, then re-energised and tested afterwards. Temporary vs Permanent Disconnection

A temporary disconnection is used when power will be restored — for example, during a switchboard upgrade or renovation. The supply is isolated, the work is done, and the ASP reconnects and re-energises once everything is compliant and tested.

A permanent disconnection (sometimes called an abolishment) is used when the supply will not be restored — typically before demolition or when a service is being permanently removed. Here the service line and meter are removed and the account is closed with the retailer. Why It Must Be a Level 2 ASP

The connection point — the pole, pillar or service fuse — is network property.
